These open-gear tuners have a 14:1 gearing ratio and a small chrome button. The post is just a hair over 1" long, and has a diameter of .236", which means it fits perfectly in a 1/4" hole. The post has two holes in it. The first hole is approximately 1/2" from the inside of the plate, and the second hole is approximately 7/8" from the inside of the plate. The machine heads can be used for either vertical (with a scroll head) or horizontal (with a flat head) mounting.

At Folkcraft Instruments, this open gear chrome button machine head is our preferred choice for the instruments we build with scroll heads. We generally do not use the bushings that are included with these dulcimer tuning gears.

These are great. I replaced the old fashioned tuners which I had to use a screwdriver every time I tuned my dulcimer. Now its easy.

Machine heads used on a dulcimer

A friend has a backpack 4 string dulcimer that suffered a bent shaft on a machine head. Folkcraft has a set of four heads that are identical to the original. these worked well once installed but, the screws packaged with the new machine heads are made with quite soft metal, such that you can round out the phillips head easily. I just want you to be aware to avoid any disappointment.

Reliable tuning gears

Good solid tuning gears, easy to install once you figure what side they each go on. Maybe they were labeled left and right but I didn't see any marks. I'm very happy with the tuners.
