LAP-JOs

The LAP-JO® is a mountain dulcimer that sounds like a banjo. The fretboard is 100 percent mountain dulcimer, so if you play dulcimer, you already know how to play a LAP-JO. The tone end is 100 percent banjo: banjo rim, hoop, tension ring, lugs, tailpiece and bridge. It can be played quietly, but it's loud enough to hold its own with a guitar or a hammered dulcimer.

We developed the LAP-JO in 2016, and the first ones sold out on their opening weekend. (The name stands for "Loud And Played – JOyously.") Each one is handmade in our workshop in Rock, Michigan, from solid mahogany, with a full two-octave range and an 11" Remo Fiberskyn head that has the look and sound of a traditional hide head.

The LAP-JO starts at $1,495. The LAP-JO Pro ($1,695) adds an ebony fretboard veneer and an L.R. Baggs pickup made for Folkcraft, so you can plug straight into an amp or PA. Cases, gig bags and strings are on this page too.
