This instrument was named the DulciVox because it has a big, sweet voice, like that of a great singer. Thus the "Vox" part of the name - "Vox" is the Latin word for "voice".

The Folkcraft DulciVox is available in two varieties - the "Standard" version, available here for $1195, and the "Pro" version, available on this page for $1495.

These two instruments are identical, except that the Pro version has a built-in Fishman passive under-saddle pickup and an ebony fretboard veneer. Both versions of the Folkcraft DulciVox have tapered fretboards - higher at the nut than at the bridge - which allows the bridge and saddle to be at the optimum height for sound and tone, while still allowing a standard capo to be used at frets one, three, and four. We also undercut the fretboard beneath the last four frets, allowing the top to vibrate more freely.

The benefits of a Folkcraft DulciVox over a traditional dulcimer? This dulcimer has more power and more sustain, while maintaining the sweet voice of a dulcimer. We accomplished this by having a bridge that wasn't part of the fretboard - this allows the top to vibrate more freely. By bracing (internally) this instrument like a traditional guitar, volume and sustain were both dramatically increased.

To keep the cost down on the Folkcraft DulciVox Standard, there are limited customization options. This instrument has the woods, scale length, fret pattern, and other options listed below. We can set up your instrument for three strings, four strings (double melody), or four strings equidistant, whatever you request. For a more customizable instrument, please select the Folkcraft DulciVox Pro.

For both the Standard and Pro versions, we've chosen mahogany and spruce as the woods, and won't be offering other options for wood choices. With the internal bracing featured on this dulcimer, we're chosen the "Classic F" sound hole as the best option.

A Leap Forward!

I am going to include my review of the DulciVox that I posted on the Everything Dulcimer Facebook page. IMHO, it is quite the instrument! The volume is definitely louder than my other dulcimers but any tune, loud or soft, sounds great. The resonance and sustain of the instrument are impressive. I read somewhere a comparison of the sound of this new dulcimer to a tenor guitar, and in my very limited experience with tenor guitars, I can understand the comparison a little bit. The clarity when playing the melody on the bass string is notable. I ordered my DulciVox set up as chromatic and glad I did as I am a chromatic convert. My feeling is that this a great leap forward in the evolution of the mountain dulcimer! That is my non-professional review and looking forward to making a lot of music on the DulciVox!

All I Had Hoped For

I am not an early adopter of ANYTHING. Also, we recently downsized and I had "thinned the herd" a bit and never thought I'd buy another dulcimer. However, when I heard about the DulciVox, I knew I had to try it. I play mainly mellow, finger-picked music, and was looking for something I could play in a health care setting (where people tend to be hard of hearing) without having to use an amp. And I just wanted a big, full, mellow sound with lots of sustain., because that's what I like. My DulciVox arrived last week, and I love it. The VSL (25") and the action are perfect. Got a 1/2 fret (but not fully chromatic) and am so glad I did. The DulciVox is very versatile; great for both strumming and finger picking, in both the quiet setting and in a jam.

DulciVox Pro

The DulciVox is all I dreamed it would be. It has the tone and volume I’ve been looking for and it is able to cut through on solos even when jamming with guitars and other instruments. Paired with a McCafferty capo for shallow fretboards it is now my go-to jamming instrument. The plugged-in tone is pretty good, too
