"For guitars, I'm hooked to Taylor guitars. For dulcimers, I like older ones, like one I built in 1975 and gave to a dear friend, and also found a 1982 dulcimer built in my next county."

"I'm a Folkcraft ambassador. Used, new, online, at the dulcimer shop, they're all pretty great"

"Sound/response/vibration or aliveness, then playability, then looks are very important to me. I prefer to explore the shops, play and discover maybe a new feel or sound that I need as I evolve. That said, I have purchased through the Internet by careful listening and talking to the maker. Certain instruments just are readily available to play and compare. Each instrument was to be my last."

"Yes, I try all. I am not brand loyal but am brand conscious. No preference to new or old. I would want to listen to it before purchasing and do not know enough to determine quality of sound from a description. I do pay attention to who plays a particular instrument."

"I'm needing to hear it and feel the soul inside. I prefer to try it in a shop. I have bought on-line and thankfully it had a good ending and it's one of my favorite instruments. It's a Folkcraft and one of two I now own. My first was bought from a previous owner and I loved it so much I ordered the other."

"I make most of mine. Some from scratch, some from kits provided by various suppliers. The rest I've bought from friends, with the exception of an autoharp I bought at a thrift store."

"depends what kind of instrument and what quality I'm looking for. If getting a starter instrument I'll just go to a music website and buy the basic setup because most are the same. If going for a more expensive middle road or higher end, I'll go to the music stores. I also love used instrument options at the music stores or pawn shops. I sometimes can pay a fraction of the price for similar quality, with maybe a few dings or scratches, which I can live with"
