"The question of the week last week referenced my version of "Beat It", by Michael Jackson. My "Beat It" was inspired by hearing Jerry Rockwell demonstrate Steely Dan's "Do It Again".

It was during a vendor jam at Kentucky Music Week a few years back. Jerry took a standard, well-known classic rock tune, slowed it down, and created a simpler acoustic dulcimer version.

The song took on new meaning, and translated to dulcimer well. From then on, I was hooked on taking songs from their original format (in this case, rock band) and reworking them to fit the mountain dulcimer.

The most unexpected tune that I do on mountain dulcimer isn't "Beat It", though. It is probably "Smelly Cat" (by the legendary singer/songwriter Phoebe Buffay)."
