The Coke Crate Dulcimers Are Finished

Two weeks ago, I showed pictures of the coke crate dulcimers in progress. Last weekend John and Karen Keane were here for the Second Saturday Clinic, and those dulcimers were built for them, so the instruments have been delivered, and were even played in a concert. Here are a couple photos.

Here is one of the Coke crate dulcimers sitting in our showroom. The extension under the fingerboard on the left is to give the player something to sit on their leg - otherwise the instrument would be too tippy. Plus it gives a little space to be decorated with cutouts from Coke cans. You can also see a couple of older instruments in our display case - on the left is Bing Futch's original doubleneck dulcimer, and on the right is a very early Folkcraft dulcimer.

I have a lot of dulcimers moving through the shop right now, and one of the things that always catches my eye are inlays. In the FolkRoots custom series dulcimers, we do an inlay in the head of the instrument. I love how this looks - and it sure makes things feel a little more upscale.

FolkRoots dulcimer head - maple inlaid into ebony. This will look great when it is lacquered and polished.
