Lorinda Jones - Sacred Music Collection

A good selection of old-time hymns. The arrangements are simple and lovely, and not difficult to play.

This book of mountain dulcimer arrangements is pretty standard in it’s arrangements, but there are some extra delights in it. First, there are additional arrangements of harmony for a couple of the songs, Amazing Grace and Morning has broken. Of course now you have to have an additional dulcimer player, which is a pretty good thing. Secondly, the selection of songs is mostly from the standard list of old songs found in many arranger’s books, but some of the songs are from the back corner pile, had the dust blown off them, and given to us to enjoy once again. Lorinda Jones has also provided photos of small churches her father pastored over the years giving us a peek into who she is, and also providing a sense of the solid rock foundation of rural America. We might, in our imaginations, hear the the mountain dulcimer, a piano, and the congregation, lifting voices in worship. This is a great resource book to have.

The hymns in this collection took me back to my early days in many small country churches. This will be a collection that I will enjoy for a long time to come. I will note that the song listing in the product description differs by six songs from what is in the actual book. The product description lists Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, Crying Holy, O' Come Angel Band, Old Gospel Ship, This World Is Not My Home, and Where The Roses Never Fade but those songs do not appear in the second edition of the book that I received. Instead of those six songs, the following were in my book Down By The Riverside, Go Tell it on the Mountain, It is Well With My Soul, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, Just As I Am, and All People That On Earth Do Well. Still it is a good collection of hymns that I will be enjoying as I learn to play these favorites on the mountain dulcimer.
