The Folkcraft Custom Series 6-String mountain dulcimer has everything you want in a powerful, rich strumming-oriented dulcimer. Ideal for both chord playing and noter-drone style performance, the three doubled courses of strings will give you power and sustain that just doesn't happen with a three- or four-string dulcimer.

What can you customize on a 6-string dulcimer instrument? Pretty much anything you imagine - fret patterns, sound holes, body woods, tone woods, and more!

Our 6-string dulcimer instrument is based on our Folkcraft Custom Series Mountain Dulcimer, and has our largest body and a 1 1/2" wide fretboard. A flat head is standard, with six enclosed-gear tuners, three on each side of the head. Whether your style of play is contemporary or traditional, this instrument does it all!

Folkcraft Six-String Custom Series dulcimers are available in both a traditional Kentucky body and in a more contemporary California body. The Kentucky body creates a quieter, more subdued tone, and the California body offers a louder, more mellow, more guitar-like tone quality. More information can be found here.

Each of our handmade dulcimers comes with our best soft carrying case, made here in the Folkcraft workshop. Our rigid case, which offers more protection, is available for an upcharge. Strap buttons are also included.

There are a lot of options to choose when designing an instrument for us to make for you. We have a reference/resource page here, and you're always welcome to contact us for help and guidance in making great choices.

Please allow us three to four months for shipping on your custom-built instrument.

Fishman Prefix Pro Blend Review

I already gave my review of the Folkcraft Custom Dulcimer, so this review is strictly for the Fishman Prefix Pro Blend pickup. Richard installed this on my dulcimer a few years after I had gotten my custom dulcimer. He did a nice job and was very accommodating to get it done for me. The pickup itself is awesome, and worth every penny. I love its acoustic tone and the possible adjustments. Richard even sent me home with good suggestions and a written sheet to help with using the pickup. Whether you order this with your custom build or choose to get it later, it's a good pickup to have.

Custom Series Dulcimer

The instrument is a thing of beauty. Action is outstanding and a pleasure to play. Folkcraft shifted it to bass at no extra charge (and also sent the original nut, bridge and strings). I just hope I can learn to play well enough to deserve it. A true pleasure to business with these folks.

Love my Folkcraft Custom Series Dulcimer!

I had been playing the mountain dulcimer for only a few months when I decided that I needed to upgrade to a dulcimer with a diatonic fret pattern 1.5, 6.5, 8.5, etc., that my old dulcimer did not have and would allow me to play more music. My appointment at Folkcraft was amazing! I wanted a quality instrument, but being very inexperienced, I needed guidance, and Richard was so helpful and patient! I selected a mahogany dulcimer with an Englemann spruce face. The scroll head and fret are padauk. It is a beautiful instrument and the sound is fantastic! I am completely happy with Folkcraft.

Cool Dulcimer

6 strings in 3 pairs gives it a nice ring. I was thinking of a version with 5 pairs of strings (10 in Total) called "MaxDAD X" because it would sound cool.

Beautiful Dulcimer, both in sound quality and build! Love it, thank you!
